Very very interesting analysis. I just hate that xbox live is not available for expansion 3 group! It means no gaming experience at all, roughly.

TIL Quinn has more than baconit (although my marketplace only lists Baconit, crack the hwip, nextbus and purduemenu...)

lol some of the others are only subpar though, especially crack the whip. It work well on the HTC Titan, but not so well on other phones. ;)

Sensational title, that is all. They also count inactive apps so the numbers are fake.

Real app count: ~88k with 12k inactive.

That's like counting profit without including expenses.

I didn't think it was that misleading. The title says "published."

I'm also curious how Apple and Google count their app stores too

I wish they'd clean up some of the uninspired, duplicate spam apps. Does this WinCoder company really need to release a separate app for every single artist? This company has 147 apps.

Since this is an arms race right now, no one wants to clean up their apps stores. Look at android and iOS, tons of crap, but it inflates the numbers. Once WP7 gets better market share, I hope they become the first to clean up the store.

Edit: I mean to say that everyone has crap apps in their stores and all leave them for upping the numbers. not sure if that came across the first time.

FYI, to any other devs reading this, bulk submissions by those like WinCoder is one of the primary reasons why it takes for-fucking-ever for your app to get certified and published.

Yep. Those jokes of developers ruin everything, for both real developers and end users.

I didn't mean to single out your company specifically as there are a ton of devs releasing a bunch of nearly identical apps.

I get it from your point of view as a developer, but as a consumer browsing "new" in the marketplace and having to scroll through a bunch of nearly identical apps (that in many cases are just basic RSS readers, etc. tied to a specific feed), I just get put off and give up.

Maybe it wouldn't be as bad if there were improvements to handle Marketplace navigation, e.g. having a sanctioned process for releasing a bunch of similar apps and then limiting how they are displayed in Marketplace by showing 4-5 apps max. with an expander to show the rest. I don't know if there's a good UI for that or not though but that way Microsoft could keep their high app count for bragging without cluttering Marketplace.
