How does it compare to EasySMS?

EasySMS requires (afaik) USB or Wifi connection, or at least a lot of configuration.. DeskDroid just works out-of-the-box over the internet, anywhere.

I'm at the "collecting messages" screen, been here for like 10 minutes now on my nexus one. In a future update you might want to setup a progress bar. I figure this is something you only expect people to see 1 time, so didn't think much of it. But it's people's first impression. Luckily i'm pretty patient so i'm going to wait it out. But i'd bet you'll save yourself a lot of 1 star reviews if you just put something there showing progress

I'd like it if there was a client app for my nook to send messages via my phone, rather than having to jump on a site in the browser, log in, send a message.

There should be a Market link on the page, also in the email. QR codes are second to Market links these days! Also, why is there a need of username. Isn't email enough?

Its no really working on my og droid running project elite. I'm on wifi to maybe make it easier. It will send messages but not receive them and it doesnt have the messages with my contacts. If i want to send a new text i have to delete what i sent last time and just press enter and it'll send.

But you're essentially giving a third party rights to send SMS messages from your device, right?

Not something I'd be too happy with really.

I have to agree. Once the product is direct to phone I'll consider it. I'm not setting my phone up to be a potential spam launch point.

Nope, SMS messages are sent to and from your own device. No other have access to neither your phone, sending messages from it or anything else. Your messages and device is completely yours. DeskDroid is just connecting to your device when you log in, so you can use your browser as an interface for sending and reading SMS through your own device.

You're giving DeskDroid (a third party) access to send SMS messages via your device. How else does it work?

I'd need to trust DeskDroid and (probably more importantly) the security they implement on their site a lot before I'd open up access to my phone.

Edit - just realised that you are the author of the application. Not trying to piss on your parade here, just giving honest feedback. But that would be my main concern, security.

Thanks for your comments. Security is, and should always be taken seriously. From the bottom up, we have been working on making DeskDroid as secure as possible. We will soon implement SSL for encryption of all communication and the site. Likewise, all information in databases are encrypted, to make sure that no wrong person can get access to wrong data or devices. But again, thanks for pointing this out, as it is really important!

Cool, that was quick. But are you still storing it in plain text?

Also, I'm signed in and trying to type in a contact name into what I'm assuming is the "To" field, but it keeps replacing what I'm typing with "Home()". I'm on Windows 7 SP1 32-bit, Chrome 10.0.648.204.

Edit: in case anyone is reading this, this was resolved after logging out and logging back in. Otherwise using DeskDroid has been a pleasure so far.

Right now, DeskDroid is free. We are working on a lot of other features, like MMS, photo/video download from phone, backup of messages and the phone, a desktop/tablet client and a lot of other things. At some point, we will make it possible to upgrade your account, to get access to all of these features.

ic thats pretty cool. BTW, im setting it up right now, i think it will be useful for me when im at home...how much data will it use (i mean data/text), and i noticed it syncs my contacts as well as all my previous texts.

how often will it sync my contacts (i mean will it sync all my contacts every hour, thereby using up data?

It will only sync once, when DeskDroid is started on the phone. After that, messages are only synced when it is sent or received, and only that one message. Contacts are currently only synced on startup.

It's a bit slow (hangs on Sending sometimes) but other than that, good work! First message I sent was sent twice, not too sure why. I may have accidentally clicked it twice? Maybe you should put in some 'spam-protection' so to speak so you can't accidentally do this?

Also, after you send a message the character-count still counts whatever length your just-sent message was, instead of resetting itself (it then resets itself as soon as you start typing).

Good work.

We are working on making messages move to the list instantly so that it is not necessary to wait for it to send, and on improving connectivity, so that these errors/problems do not appear. Until then, if you have a problem with messages not getting sent, please restart DeskDroid on your phone, and refresh the browser. Thanks :)

Crosstxt does the same thing, but it's in closed beta.

EDIT: Sticking with crosstxt. It alerts you when you get new messages, has a chrome extension to give you desktop alerts when you get new messages, and doesn't force close. It also lets you control your information, you can delete messages/contact information off their servers.

It came integrated with PDAnet tethering, it was pretty nice to not have to answer from a phone while on the computer.

It will be running in the background on your phone, yes. But fortunately, it will not eat up your battery, as it is only active very briefly when you send or receive a message. We have tested it out on multiple devices, and has not found that it is using battery notably.

Well, the same way as apples are better than oranges. It is a different application, with different features. DeskDroid will in time be expanded to also cover backup, galleries and lots of other features. For now, the big difference is that you can manage messages currently on your phone (delete, read and so on), from the browser. DeskDroid is an interface to your phone :)

Google Voice can not receive SMS from email.

Where does this come into play? Any site that wants to send an SMS to authenticate an account. Take Facebook as an example. If you plug your google voice number into Facebook as a mobile, they will attempt to send an SMS to it for authentication.

With this app, the SMSes go through your phone, so you get all the advantages of a a real SMS message, plus the convenience of using your web desktop to send it.

I like PDANet for this same reason, though it does require a USB connection.

These really are two completely different services that have a function that somewhat overlaps. But if we try to compare, some other advantages this app has would be (probably) MMS - google hasn't added that feature to voice yet - and using it without switching your number. (This is just speculation - I can't test the app because I don't have a texting plan)

Voice has some advantages as well:

  • texts and calls archived in the cloud rather than on your phone

  • free visual voicemail

  • you don't lose the ability to send/receive texts on a different device if your phone is off

  • you can send/receive from any device with an internet connection and a browser without installing software

  • texts are handled as data, so you can save money by switching to GV and abandoning your texting plan

Thanks! It's cool to hear from a developer so quickly.

One thing that would be nice would be if the favicon for the website changed to show new messages when they come in. Currently, instead of showing a favicon, on Chrome you get a spiny icon that never goes away, making it look like the page is never done loading. Perhaps there's some javascript or ajax causing that to happen?

Found a bug, it adds a "\" before an apostrophe for some reason.

For example, if I type: Hope you're having a good day.

It actually sends: Hope you\'re having a good day.

By the way, this is wicked fast, as soon as I hit the sending button it shows up on my phone (Evo on Sprint). I just wish it would say "message sent" instead of "sending".

Hey all, We have fixed a bug that caused contacts not to be displayed. This is working now - it was a problem with contacts that contains special characters in their phone number (*#+ and so on). It should be working now. Also, if you like this application, I would be very happy if you would go to Android Market and rate it. Thank you :)

I backup my messages through "SMS Backup" — will messages that I send through DeskDroid be backed up? Essentially, where are the messages stored when sent through DeskDroid?

Could you please try starting the application, and send a report when asked? That way, we will be able to fix this problem. Thank you :)

Do people still use SMS?

I don't want to, but I have to say it: GTalkSMS does way more than this without the need to make an account.

Been waiting all day for the deskdroid site to load my contacts and msgs but it has not. I'm from australia and was wondering if this is why it is not working? Stuck on "fetching messages" status!!

Some of my contacts have the number in this format ### ### ### When your app tries to send the sms, instead of sending to ######### it sends to ###+###+### and fails.

I am going to try your app, but I do have to ask:

1 - How are you going to make money out of this? 2 - In what ways will you use the information stored in my phone?

Hello,

  1. I explained that in an earlier post. As more features will be added to the app, it will at some point be possible to buy a subscription for some services.
  2. We do not use your information in any way. Your information is yours.

Using a Nexus One on Gingerbread here, website hangs on 'Sending...' when I attempt to send an SMS.

Also, please implement SSL on your websites login ASAP :)

8 out of 10 messages it hangs at "Sending" - tried to reopen the app multiple times and my phone has a a steady connection to the internet.

When I send messages to myself - there are no problems.

Great idea though!

It seems to be misinterpreting my phone book entries. I.e., messages to +1 (212) 555-1234 is being sent to +1%28212%29555-1234.

I really like the concept but it the web front does not work well for me at all...None of my contacts were listed, and half of the messages were all sent from "undefined" Also when I received a message when connected the web front end didn't update. When I went to refresh, I no longer got any messages listed. I'll try again in a couple months as this is definitely a problem I'm seeking a solution for and your app if working properly would solve it!

You can already do this via GMail if you have it enabled in Labs. No app required.

This is great! Any chance you'll expose an API? I could see some ideas for cool integration w/ other software if an API was available.

UPDATE: SSL is now implemented at the website, so that all communication goes through HTTPS. This will also be added in the phone-application with the next release.
