Hey reddit, I made a live wallpaper called Liquid Physics and I need some help testing it out. I want to make sure the wallpaper is optimized and runs well on all phones on the market, which is hard because there are so many out. If you wan to help, please download the live wall paper from the market (link bellow) and test it out.

Comments, thoughts, questions, feedback and anything eles can be either posted to the comments or emailed to me. Thanks reddit, I really appreciated it! :D

I downloaded this a couple of weeks ago (even though I swore it was from another developer), and the only issue I had was that it looks cool, if you move the phone around a lot, but when it's stationary the particles tend to just lay at the bottom.

Seems more like a time-wasting app than a wallpaper, IMO. Nothing against you, but it seems like if it's made for wallpaper, that it should be more...."active". Like something that would catch your attention a little more.

Plus consider that landscape mode on the desktop(s) is becoming standard, and there's usually a 1-2 second lag going from portrait to landscape. Keep that in mind if your striving to create constant, fluid motions.

Just installed on my N1, default setting are a bit slow. Maybe try decreasing gravity, during regular use they all just sit at the bottom.

What version of Android are you using? And what phone?

Go into your settings, then there should be something "about phone" or software update section, and it will tell you if you are running 1.6, 2.1, 2.2 etc.

if you have a g1 and you're not running a custom from the you're on cupcake or 1.6.

is there something newer I could get?

If you can financially, I would just get a new phone. I upgraded from a g1 to a nexus s, and the difference is more than night and day - android just feels fundamentally different nowadays.

But if you can't do that, or are waiting for something next gen to come out, you could always root and install a custom rom.

It's fairly easy, I'm sure someone will answer this question for you ITT, or you can also make a post in this subreddit.

Also, first result from google: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480

XDA is a great resource for any phone, check it out.

^In conclusion only Android 2.1+ supports live wallpapers, thus the market hides it from you. Thanks for the feedback though :)

Tested on a xoom. The biggest problem I see is that the particles go below the bottom menu bar. If you hold the xoom just right and still enough you can't see any particles at all.

If you have any questions for me I'll do my best to get back to you quicky, but I probably won't be back on for a few hours. :-)

Thanks! I saw that on the emulator, but the emulators are often not very good models of how it really looks. I will work on that.

I have the same issue on xoom. Also the particles bounce off an invisible wall at the top menu bar.

Really? About how large is the invisible gap at the top? Another question, if you view the wallpaper in the wallpaper selection screen does it go full screen and then is the bottom bound correct? Is the bottom bar always visible on all apps?

Same invisible wall at the top in the preview. It is exactly as large as the menu bar in most apps. Yes the bottom bar is always visible it cannot be removed by an app. The built in wallpapers animate under the top menu bar on the launcher.

I have updated the wallpaper with hopefully some android 3.0 fixes. Let me know if any of them help :)

I checked this out on my Nexus S. It's very cool , I actually think I understand fluid dynamics a lot better now than I did before.

I do have a bug to report though. I was trying to get the fluid to pool in a corner when I discovered it. As I slowly tilted the phone clockwise (from a portrait orientation), the fluid seemed to somehow be attached to the bottom of the screen. Once the phone was completely rotated on it's side, the fluid exploded all over the screen. (then pooled on the to side of the screen)

Edit: After more testing, it seems to me like the application is just assuming that 'down' will always be up or down, i.e. it doesn't support landscape orientation at all. So perhaps it's not a bug so much as my incorrect assumption about what the application is supposed to do.

Edit 2: lol, I swear i've nailed it down this time. It only exhibits this behavior when the acceleration-produced-by-gravity vector points out of the screen, like when I'm using it in bed.

I see what you mean, you mean when you hold it over your head and look up to see it? I have a Nexus One on my phone the gravity goes into over drive when it is held like that, I will look into it. Thanks for the tip!

You fixed it already! Nice. I have two questions for you.

  1. Have you done any battery life tests? I'm somewhat concerned that this wallpaper might use too much cpu for daily use. Fluid simulation is expensive, after all.

  2. Would it be difficult to implement changing the color of the fluid as a function of battery life? I would love to be able to match this with my battery life widget that changes at 15% and 30%.

This is a great wallpaper, especially now that the fluid responds to the movement of the phone more directly and interestingly. I look forward to more updates and future projects!

I have to say I like it very much, lot of options. Also does not seem to waste as much power as other live wallpapers. I think it a well done app for sure.
