Looking For Beta Testers - OctoEverywhere access your printer from anywhere for free!

Hello!

I'm the developer behind my new community project, OctoEverywhere.com! I started the project because I had a personal need to access my printer remotely - I need full access to the OctoPrint portal so I could use all of my plugins. I setup port forwarding for a while (which you shouldn’t do because it’s super insecure), but I thought there must be a better way.

So, I came up with OctoEverywhere! What I was able to create was a super easy to use, secure, and powerful system that allows you to access your full OctoPrint website portal from anywhere! Since it’s the full portal, all of your plugins work and even you webcam! Another cool side effect of how the system works is OctoEverywhere can power 3rd party apps to work from anywhere as well!

I’m trying to slowly open up the system to the community to see how it scales and to work out bugs. One of my major goals of the system is to keep it accessible for the entire community, thus the system is free. My goal is to use the supporter account system to balance the offset of server costs from the free accounts. But I need to see how well the system can scale in terms of free accounts and supporter accounts to know if that’s practical.

Thus, I call on you reddit! Please feel free to check out the website, install the plugin, and give it a try! Please make sure to post any feedback or bug reports you have on our subreddit, /r/octoeverywhere. I really appreciate any feedback or help I can get, thanks!

How’s it work? VPN tunnel?

A reverse proxy tunnel not entirely unlike for example ngrok.

Yup! It’s exactly this, but it’s all custom written just for OctoPrint. Since it’s custom, we can do whatever we want! I think that’s where some of the systems magic is, because it’s so tightly integrated for OctoPrint, it makes everything work super well and super easily. It’s also what makes it possible to work with third party apps, because the system has control over the access.

Basically the printer keeps and open websocket connection (over https) to the servers. Then when you make a https request to our services we tunnel the request to your OctoPrint device, make the request locally, and send the result back out.

Does this have to involve your servers or could I configure this to use my personal website to access my print?

Do I understand correct, this is a hosted webservice and not something I could host myself?

Correct! All you have to do is make a free account and install the plugin. Then you can access your printer with:

<whatever name you want>.octoeverywhere.com

Or from the the homepage. I would love for you to try it out and to send any feedback you have about the setup process. 😊

I’m in the middle of a 32 hour print, but I’ll give it a go afterwards. Thanks for sharing!

Oh gosh good luck with the print! I will fully admit I’m quite a hardware noob. I have an ender 3 that I really love but have been having a lot of trouble with recently.

Please feel free to share any and all feedback you have on the system if you try it and find time!

Nice app. Would love to see support for external identity (Google, Microsoft etc) as I prefer to not create more user/password accounts than I have to. Adding one or two of those services gives you a free bonus of multi-factor auth, especially important when it’s controlling physical things in my house.

Very good point. I will look into adding support for external logins, I personally don’t like them bc I don’t think 3rd party services tracking my activity, but it’s a good user choice.

The 2 factor auth is also really interesting. I might be able to add that somewhat easily to existing accounts, that might be a good idea as well.

Security was something I took very seriously when building the system, which I think you can see from some design choices I made. (Like shared connections and such.)

I have been using it a lot. It is exactly the solution I needed for my printers. However (and this may be because of my crappy rural internet) I have problems loading large files remotely. I was just thinking I needed to get in touch with you about it.

I will try loading some of the files I know cause a problem and get screenshots if you need.

Thanks for that feedback!

Do the large files ever work? Like even if you try to use them on a good connection? Do you only have issues with uploads or downloads? I have had to play around with some of the limits around file size both uploads and downloads. That's something I have on my todo list to come back to and make better.

But fundamentally bandwidth is expensive for the system, so there probably have to be some limits there.

I end up loading them locally. When I had a spaghetti detective subscription I was able to load the files that way onto one printer (I have 2 printers, both with octoeverywhere 1 with tsd).

Not only does loading large files fail, it also causes the pi to reboot.

Hey, is it just Browser Access or is there also something like a mobile app?(:

The system gives you access to the OctoPrint web UI or you can use any 3rd party mobile app. OctoEverywhere by itself doesn’t have any printer UI, all of the UI I have is just for account login and printer management.

Been using it as well. I like it!! Better that TSD which never caught any print screwups.
